Uniform Policy

Approved by the local governing body in May 2026

Review by May 2027

Our school uniform shows that pupils belong to our school community and should be worn with pride. All children should wear our uniform when attending school, on their way to and from school or when participating in school-organised events.

Pupils are expected to wear the correct uniform at all times (other than specified non-school uniform days).

School uniform:

  • promotes a sense of pride in who we are 
  • engenders a feeling of community and belonging
  • is practical and smart
  • reduces distraction 
  • identifies the students with the school
  • ensures students feel equal in terms of appearance

It is essential that all items of clothing are clearly marked with your child’s name, in the case of footwear please mark both shoes.  Articles of jewellery must be removed before sports activities and will not be allowed if any hazard to other pupils is presented by such items (members of staff are not obliged to accept responsibility for valuables brought to school by the children).

General

  • No jewellery (one pair of studded earrings and a watch are permitted)
  • Any “smart” wristwatch or device – for example one with internet access, playable games, or a recording device - is not permitted in school
  • No tight fitting trousers or very short skirts
  • Hairstyles should be appropriate: no extreme hair cuts or tram lines, no unnatural hair colours or large overly decorative hair accessories
  • No makeup or nail varnish
  • Bags:
    • Reception/KS1 children need a royal or navy blue bookbag (this can be purchased from anywhere - a Hagbourne specific bag is not required)
    • KS2 children may prefer to bring a rucksack. Please ensure that this is small enough to fit easily onto a peg 
  • If your child has a sensory or physical need and requires reasonable adaptations to their uniform parents can get in touch with Mrs Dobson, who can answer questions about the policy and respond to any requests

SECOND HAND UNIFORM is sold for a small donation regularly throughout the school year or if required sooner then please contact the PTA by email: PTA@hagbourne.school

HAGBOURNE C OF E SCHOOL UNIFORM

Winter**                

  • Grey trousers/shorts or grey skirt/culottes/pinafore dress
  • White polo shirt (short or long sleeved)
  • Royal blue jumper* or cardigan* with the school name
  • Grey, white or black socks or tights (no trainer socks)
  • Black shoes or trainers (no boots, trainers must be ENTIRELY black including sole - see examples below)

Summer                  

  • White polo shirt (short or long sleeved)
  • Grey trousers/skirt/culottes/pinafore or shorts
  • OR Royal blue and white checked dress
  • Royal blue jumper* or cardigan* with the school name
  • White, black or grey socks
  • Black shoes or trainers (no sandals, trainers must be ENTIRELY black including sole - see examples below)

PE KIT

We request that the high standards we expect and uphold for school uniform also applies to children’s PE kits. When children have PE, they should come to school dressed in the PE kit as described below:

  • Pale blue polo shirt
  • Navy blue shorts
  • OR Navy blue PLAIN jogging bottoms or leggings (may be needed in winter)
  • Navy blue Hagbourne sweatshirt* OR PLAIN navy blue sweatshirt. Please note for safety reasons, PE jumpers must be round-neck NOT HOODIES
  • Trainers (any colour but must be suitable for sport so no converse or high tops)
  • For safety reasons earrings must be removed and long hair tied back
  • Swimming kit to include a swimsuit/shorts (not bermuda style), towel and swimming hat (Reception class, year 1 and 2 swim in terms 5 and 6; years 3-6 swim in terms 1 and 6)

RECEPTION CLASS

Winter**                  

  • Navy jogging bottoms/leggings
  • White polo shirt (short or long sleeved)
  • Royal blue jumper* or cardigan*
  • Grey, black or white socks
  • Black shoes or trainers (no boots, trainers must be ENTIRELY black including sole - see examples below)

Summer                   

  • White polo shirt (short or long sleeved)
  • Navy tracksuit bottoms/leggings or navy shorts
  • OR  mid-blue checked summer dress (same as older children)
  • Plain white or grey socks
  • (no boots, trainers must be ENTIRELY black including sole - see examples below)

Reception children are expected to bring their PE uniform to school on PE days and will change at school.

Forest School Learning days

On Forest school days, children should come to school in their Forest Learning clothes of a long sleeved top and trousers suitable for getting wet or dirty. Children also need to bring in wellies or sturdy trainers and a waterproof coat. 

** Winter uniform is required after the October Half-term and Summer uniform is required after the Easter break.

We recognise that school uniform represents a cost to families and have limited our requirement for branded items. The school will always provide uniform for families in need and have allowed for many items to be unbranded and purchased more cheaply from many retailers. 

*School jumpers, cardigans and PE jumpers are available from Trutex Didcot, 14 Cockcroft Road, OXON OX11 8LL. Tel: 01235 211011. These are the only branded uniform items. All other items can be bought from any supermarket or clothing outlet. Please note that there are plenty of branded items in the second-hand uniform shop. 

Please contact the office if you have any difficulties in paying for uniform as support may be available. 

Examples of trainers suitable for school uniform - please note that coloured trainers may be worn as part of the PE kit, but no converse or high tops
