Geography
Intent
At Hagbourne Primary School, we aim to inspire pupils to become curious and explorative thinkers with a diverse knowledge of the world. We intend to equip pupils with confidence to observe and ask questions to develop their knowledge about diverse places, people and resources, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We aim to achieve this through following the Kapow scheme of work, which clearly identifies and implements all areas of the National Curriculum. We hope to encourage pupils to become resourceful, active citizens who will have the skills to contribute to and improve the world around them.
The aims of teaching Geography in our school are:
• To inspire curiosity and a desire to discover more about the world.
• To equip children with knowledge of the world’s continents, countries, cities, seas and oceans.
• To develop the skills of interpreting a range of sources of geographical information. This includes maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
• To help children understand how the human and physical features of a place shape its location and can change over time.
• To provide opportunities for cross-curriculum study of multiple subjects. For example: statistics and geometry in Mathematics and spoken language and comprehension in English.
Implementation
In line with Kapow's teaching scheme, Geography at Hagbourne is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. The Kapow Primary scheme is a spiral curriculum, with essential knowledge and skills revisited with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to revise and build on their previous learning.
Cross-curricular links are included throughout each unit, allowing children to make connections and apply their Geography skills to other areas of learning. Children also have the opportunity to conduct fieldwork, which ranges from localised opportunities on the school grounds to larger-scale visits to investigate physical and human features. This fieldwork often gives the children opportunities to measure and record necessary data before analysing and presenting their findings.
Impact:
Through the implementation of the Geography curriculum, we are ensuring that children revisit key skills and knowledge at each Key Stage, in addition to providing assessment opportunities at the start of each new topic. Our children are exposed to a curriculum that broadens horizons, develops critical thinking and promotes our school values.
